Update to No-Fly Zones for Drones

As of March 15th 2019, the Bermuda Civil Aviation Authority (BCAA) have issued new Directions in accordance with the Air Navigation (Overseas Territories) Order under Article 68 to include restricted fly zones over Westgate Correctional Facility, Police Headquarters at Prospect, and an update to the no-fly zone at L.F Wade International Airport.

The Directions were put in place for the safety and security and any person who contravenes, permits the contravention of, or fails to comply with the Directions commits an offence under Article 68(4) of the Order, and is punishable on summary conviction of a fine not exceeding $4,000.

Thomas Dunstan, Director General of BCAA commented, “Drones have become more popular in Bermuda as technological advances have made them more accessible and affordable to the general public. The increase in drone activity has led to safety and security challenges in the local airspace, specifically around the airport, Westgate and the Police headquarters.

“We are implementing a 3-pronged approach to drones in the local airspace, which includes education, legislation and enforcement support.”

The Directions follow at least three incidents involving drones over the Westgate Correctional Facility and one unauthorized drone flying over the airport property.

The restrictions apply to unmanned aircraft (drones), microlights, gliders, airships and balloons and the no-fly zones are summarised below:

  • A one hundred and fifty (150) metre radius circle around the Westgate Facility with the centre being 32°19'28.8"N 64°50'17.4"W
  • A one hundred and twenty-five (125) metre radius circle around the Prospect property with the centre being 32°18'00.8"N 64°45'58.1"W
  • A two nautical mile radius circle around the airport with the centre being 32°21'52.3"N 64°41'04.0"W
