FDR & CVR ULB - 90-Day Requirement

As a consequence of not being able to locate the wreckage of the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 in March of 2014, regulations have been developed with the aim of preventing such circumstances from occurring again. These ICAO SARPS include requiring all aircraft (private and commercial) that are capable of being equipped with an FDR to be fitted with an Underwater Locator Beacon (ULB), sometimes referred to as Underwater Locating Device (ULD):

“Non-deployable flight recorder containers shall have securely attached an automatically activated underwater locating device operating at a frequency of 37.5 kHz. At the earliest practicable date, but not later than 1 January 2019, this device shall operate for a minimum of 90 days.”

Our OTARs will be amended in due course to reflect this update in accordance with ICAO Annex 6 Part 2 Appendix 2.3.
